Brazil is home to one of the lowest carbon power sectors across the globe. And, it has nearly limitless potential for renewable energy development, generating nearly 93 percent of its electricity from decarbonized sources during the first nine months of 2023. The country is also a global leader in renewable energy sector job creation and will host COP30 later this year for the first time in an Amazonian city. Yet, Brazil remains a top global greenhouse gas emitter—driven largely by agriculture, deforestation, and the ambitions of the state-owned oil company, Petrobras, to dramatically increase production and exports of oil by the end of the decade. In short, we cannot achieve a globally decarbonized economy without Brazil’s leadership. There is a critical window of opportunity with COP30 taking place in Belém and ahead of the 2026 presidential election in Brazil to run large-scale campaigns with local and transnational partners to build national pride around renewable energy leadership and exports. It is critical to socialize the benefits of Brazil’s near-limitless, exportable renewable energy potential and the perils of investing government dollars into future fossil fuel expansion.
